An associate of former NBA player Manute Bol says Bol has died at a Virginia hospital, where he was being treated for severe kidney trouble and a painful skin condition.

Sudan Sunrise executive director Tom Prichard says in an e-mail that the 7-foot-6 Bol died Saturday morning at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.

The 47-year-old Bol played 10 seasons in the NBA and later founded Sudan Sunrise, a humanitarian group based in Lenexa, Kan., that promotes reconciliation in Sudan. Bol played professionally with Washington, Golden State, Philadelphia and Miami.

Bol was hospitalized in mid-May during a stopover in Washington after returning to the United States from Sudan. Prichard says Sudan "and the world have lost a hero."

France's broadcasting watchdog has ordered the world's third biggest satellite provider, Eutelsat, to take Palestinian channel al-Aqsa TV off the air.

Deputy Head of the channel Mohammed Thuraya told AFP on Tuesday that French broadcasts would cease within 48 hours by the order of the country's Conseil Supérieur de 'Audiovisuel (CSA).

"We were told that the reason behind the decision to stop broadcasting al-Aqsa was 'incitement to hatred,' without any explanation," the official said.

"This is the unfair result of pressure from the Zionist lobby on the American administration, which in turn pressured France and Eutelsat," he added.

Thuraya criticized the decision for having no legal or moral justification, adding that the move would lead to the loss of 70 percent of the channel's viewers.

According to the channel's official, a request for an extra day to consult lawyers and rights groups in order to appeal the decision was turned down.

The decision follows al-Aqsa's in-depth coverage of Israel's May 31 attack on the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla aid convoy.

During the assault Israeli commandos killed 20 people travelling aboard the ships to break the Gaza siege.

The Gaza-based channel, which was launched in 2006, has offices in Gaza, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey, and has around 400 employees.

The channel gives a behind-the-scene look at the hardship suffered by the impoverished people of Gaza under the crippling Israeli blockade of the coastal strip.

It also provided a non-stop coverage of the Israeli war on Gaza in December 2008, which destroyed all the channel's studios but failed to take it off the air.

The euro currency has slipped to an 18-month low against the US dollar amid fears that European spending cuts and tax rises could derail economic recovery.

The euro slid as low $1.2358 on electronic trading platform EBS on Friday, its lowest position since October 2008, while the concerns also pushed down markets and the price of oil.

Holocaust deniers face jail under new Hungarian law

Denying or playing down the Holocaust in Hungary is to be a criminal offense punishable by up to three years imprisonment after President Laszlo Solyom signed new legislation into law on Wednesday.

A spokesman said the president did not consider the legislation to be in contravention of the constitutional right to freedom of speech.

The legislation, initiated by the governing Hungarian Socialist Party, was passed by Hungary's parliament on February 22 in the last scheduled legislative session before general elections in April.

The centre-right opposition party Fidesz abstained from the vote after the Socialists rejected a motion to extend the scope of the law to also cover crimes committed in the name of Communism from 1948 to 1989.

Barbara Rosenkranz, the Freedom Party candidate, admitted defeat after running a campaign in which she had questioned Austria’s law banning Nazi ideology and the denial of the Holocaust.

“This was a defeat for Rosenkranz, for the Freedom Party and for its leader, Heinz-Christian Strache,” an analyst, Peter Hajek, said.

Ms. Rosenkranz incited a significant controversy during an otherwise dull election campaign, by saying that Austria’s banning of Nazi ideology and Holocaust denial were “unnecessary restrictions” on freedom of opinion. She later said she did not deny that the Nazis had committed atrocities during the Holocaust.

Ms. Rosenkranz, a mother of 10 whose husband is a former member of a neo-Nazi party, said during the campaign that she regarded herself as “a woman of the people.”

“You cannot bend me, and you definitely cannot break me,” she told supporters during a final election rally on Friday.

Mr. Fischer presented himself as a calm bridge-builder between Austria’s various political camps. He campaigned as the statesman alternative to Ms. Rosenkranz, whose reputation, Mr. Fischer said, could potentially damage Austria’s image abroad.

Princess Madeleine of Sweden has broke off her engagement with attorney Jonas Bergstrom, the Royal Court announced on Saturday.

“They have decided that the best for them is to go their separate ways,” the palace said in a brief statement.

The court asked for the media to leave the princess and her former fiance alone.

“They need peace and quiet in this difficult situation. The heavy coverage does not ease the situation for them,” it said, adding it would not comment further on the issue.

The couple got engaged in August last year, but a date had not yet been set for the wedding.

The reasons for the break up were not disclosed, but Norwegian magazine Se og Hoer published an interview this week with a woman named Tora Uppstroem Berg who claimed she had spent a night with the princess’ fiance at a popular Swedish skiing resort last year.

The court has not commented on the report.

Madeleine, 27, is third in line to the Swedish throne, after her sister Crown Princess Victoria and brother Prince Carl Philip. After completing an undergraduate degree in art, history and ethnology in 2006, she has combined studies in social affairs with work for the World Childhood Foundation in Stockholm.

Mr. Bergstrom, 30, has a master’s degree in law and has worked as an associate lawyer at a firm in Stockholm since 2006.

Madeleine Therese Amelie Josephine - the Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Halsingland and Gastrikland - is the youngest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

She has two older siblings, Crown Princess Victoria who is getting married to her fiance Daniel Westling in June and Prince Carl Philip.
