The White House condemns the torching of a mosque, yet respectable Americans contribute to a yeshiva whose rabbi said it's okay to kill gentile babies. It is no surprise that the American administration tacitly, if unenthusiastically, accepted the excuse that the map of national priority zones the cabinet approved on Sunday does not violate the decision to freeze construction in the settlements.

How can President Barack Obama object to furthering education in a settlement like Yitzhar, located in the heart of the West Bank? After all, his own tax revenues contribute to the flourishing of the Od Yosef Chai Shechem yeshiva, the settlement's crowning glory.

This is the same yeshiva whose rabbi said it is permissible to kill gentile babies because of "the future danger that will arise if they are allowed to grow into evil people like their parents."

MSNBC host Dylan Ratigan apologized Monday for his "very rude" conduct last week during an interview on health care with a Florida congresswoman.

Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz was explaining Friday on Ratigan's show "Morning Meeting" why she supported health care reform. Ratigan, who said he has "incredible frustration" with the way the bill treated insurance companies, asked her to explain why stocks for insurers were going up.

A Las Vegas teacher has been suspended while district officials investigate claims that she denied in class that the Holocaust happened.

A Clark County schools spokesman says Northwest Career and Technical Academy teacher Lori Sublette was assigned to remain home, and that "appropriate action" would follow a probe of the complaint.

A student tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal that Sublette said during a Nov. 25 class that history books were inaccurate and Nazis in World War II lacked the technology to kill millions of Jews.

Sublette is a full-time gym teacher. The district says she was teaching a 30-minute weekly class designed to prepare students for life after high school.

Regulators on Friday shut down two big California banks, as well as banks in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Michigan and Illinois, bringing to 140 the number of U.S. banks brought down this year by the weak economy and mounting loan defaults.

"Dashing the hopes of Democratic lawmakers Sunday, Sen. Joseph Lieberman signaled he would oppose a health care bill that includes a proposal to expand Medicare to people as young as 55.

The independent Connecticut senator has told Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, that he would vote against the Medicare at 55 proposal. He also said he would oppose cloture and work with the GOP if it ends up in the final version of the bill, two Democratic sources told CNN Sunday.

Unanimous Republican opposition so far means Senate Democrats need all 60 votes in their caucus, which includes Lieberman, to pass the sweeping bill.

Earlier, on the CBS program "Face the Nation," Lieberman and moderate Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska cited necessary changes to the bill before they would vote for it.

Lieberman outlined steps that he said would ensure the bill passes the Senate with support from Democrats and some Republicans. Forget about the government-run public health insurance option, Lieberman said, as well as the Medicare measure that was proposed last week as part of a package of alternatives to the public option."

Financial regulation, even against fraud, was strenuously opposed by then(1998) Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan(Israeli), Treasury secretary Robert Rubin(Israeli) and undersecretary Larry Summers(Israeli), who is now the top economic policymaker in the Barack Obama White House. The two men, who were shot at a North Hollywood synagogue five weeks ago Thursday, may have been "targeted as part of a stern warning linked to a criminal organization," according to Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Michael P. Downing.

The shootings occurred around 6:20 a.m. on Oct. 29, in a parking garage under the Adat Yeshurun Valley Sephardic Congregation on Sylvan Street, police said.

The two victims had just arrived in separate vehicles for a Morning Prayer service and were shot in the legs after they got out, LAPD Deputy Chief Michel Moore said. Moore said the shooter did not speak to the victims before opening fire.

"Investigators believe that without warning, the gunman tried to shoot the man, and his weapon malfunctioned," LAPD spokesman Richard French said.

"As he tried to get the weapon to work, a second victim heard and saw what was happening and approached the gunman," French said, and "at that point, the suspect shot both of the victims."

The gunman then fled on foot. No arrests have been made.

Authorities initially feared the shootings were terrorism-related or a hate crime but ruled out those possibilities within hours of the shootings.

"I was out on that scene," Downing told the Jerusalem Post. "The two victims had been kneecapped. That's not indicative of terrorism. It resembled a targeted, surgical strike."

The victims "were targeted as part of a stern warning linked to a criminal organization," Downing said.

Downing made his comments earlier this week in an interview with the Jerusalem Post in Tel Aviv, where he was taking part in a Safe City Solutions Conference addressing urban crime and terrorism.

Downing, who heads the LAPD's Counter-Terrorism and Criminal Intelligence Bureau, was back in Los Angeles on Wednesday, when he gave the Los Angeles Times an interview qualifying his assertions about the synagogue shootings.

"It is something we are looking at, but we have made no definitive conclusions," Downing told The Times. No one has absolutely decided the shootings were related to organized crime, he said.
